Grammar for
Academic Writing
These materials were developed initially for the
pre-sessional course at the University of Exeter in 2003. The purpose of the
site is to help students improve language areas that have been identified by
their teachers in marking their essays.
This marking procedure uses a set of 24 types of errors
which were originally developed by Carolyn Walker for marking essay papers
in the traditional way. Markin Software was adapted by Norbert Berger
for marking essays electronically. Patrick Jehu, Sue Nuttall and Norbert
Berger modified the previous set of categories into its present form.
Norbert Berger created the new button set and programmed links and links
pages to allow students instant access to relevant background information on
specific errors as well as relevant online exercises both on this site and
on the internet.
