Computer use for students - Public PC Clusters

Most personal computers and workstations are owned by individual departments or schools and their use is restricted to members of that department or school. All postgraduates may use the PCs in Clydesdale House. Some clusters of IBM PC-compatible systems are managed by IT Services and are available to all members of the University. These clusters include:

Laver Building

     - 5th Level Computer Teaching Room

     - Reception Area

Amory Building

     - Room 232

     - Room 340

Queen's Building

     - Clerestory (electronic mail and World Wide Web only)

     - LT2 Foyer (electronic mail and World Wide Web only)

     - Pallas Room 1

     - Pallas Room 2

Streatham Court

     - Computing Laboratory (Room 72)

     - Room 116

University Library

     - Close to Main Entrance

Haighton Building

     - Ground Floor of North Wing, St Luke's Campus

The personal computers in the 5th level Computer Teaching Room in Laver Building are heavily used for teaching in term, and Room 340 in Amory Building, the North Wing of Haighton Building and the locations listed above in Streatham Court are sometimes used for teaching (see bookings).

Some rooms are open 24 hours/day. Mondex locks have been fitted so that PCs in the Library cluster and in Room 116 in Streatham Court can be accessed at any time using a Mondex card and the associated personal code number. For other rooms a keypad number, which is changed each week, is required for the door when the building is closed. IT Services (Queen's Building) Reception in Queen's Building can supply the keypad numbers required for access to Pallas Rooms 1 and 2. The keypad numbers for Room 340 in Amory Building and the Streatham Court Computing Laboratory can be obtained from their porters; you will be asked to show your Mondex card to prove that you are eligible to use the facilities.

Some publicly-available PCs have CD-ROM drives and/or sound cards. Headphones, which may be purchased from IT Services if required, must be worn when using multimedia CD-ROMs as no speakers are available.

There are maps showing the locations of buildings on the Streatham and St Luke's campuses containing clusters of personal computers for general University use.

Users should note that they may be challenged at any time by a member of IT Services staff or the University Estate Patrol and asked to show a University smart card or an IT Services registration card to prove that they are eligible to use Central Computing facilities managed by IT Services.
