University Chaplains

 

The Christian Chaplains

 

In addition to the many and varied student Christian Societies (see the Guild Societies page), you are also invited to make use of the Chaplains and the Chapels.

 

The Chaplains all work closely together and they are available to anyone, of any faith or none. The full-time Church of England Chaplains are the Revd. Jeremy Law and the Revd. David Nixon.

 

Jeremy's focus of activity is the Streatham Site and he can be found in Room 151, Theology Dept, Queen's Building, Tel: 264240. He is available daily on a drop-in basis between 3.45-4.45pm but is happy to be contacted at any time, as is David, the St. Luke's Chaplain. David's office is Holnicote 109, Tel: 264802.

 

There is also a full-time Roman Catholic Chaplain, Father Paul Cummins, and seven part-time Chaplains appointed by other Christian denominations. They are: Raymond Thompson (Quaker), Revd Dr. Alastair Logan (United Reformed), Derek Burnside (Independent Churches), Deacon Peter Scorer   (Russian Orthodox), Revd. Peter Webb (Baptist) and Revd Steve Browning (Methodist).  In addition, there is a full-time Pastoral Assistant, Ms Melanie Griffiths, who can be found in Room 217

 Amory, Tel: 263131. Her drop-in hours are from 11.30-1.00pm (See door of 217 Amory for slight change Mondays and Wednesdays).

 

The University Chapel (next to Queen's Building) is open every day from Morning Prayers (8.30-8.50am) onwards for anyone to use; the main Sunday service is a sung Holy Communion at 10.30am, led by the Choir and the Chapel Worship Group. A similar pattern of daily worship and a Sunday service is found in the St. Luke's Chapel on the School of Education Site. Father Paul Cummins is to be found in the Catholic Chaplaincy, situated in Glenthorne Road between Birks and Duryard, Tel: 271191 for further details.

 

The Chaplaincy rooms in the Roborough basement contain a library, tea and coffee and meeting facilities, and are open daily. Full details of the Chaplains, services and Religious Societies can be found posted on the noticeboards in the Chaplaincy Room.

 

Other Religious Communities

 

The Chaplain for Jewish Students in the south-west of England is Rabbi Hillel Simon, who lives at 9a Park Row, Bristol. His telephone number is 0117 9255160. In addition there is a Synagogue in Mary Arches Street; Tel: 251529.

 

Muslims are invited to make contact with the Islamic Centre of the South West, 15 York Road, Exeter.  For details of the prayer times please phone the Imam on 250597.

General Information

 

The University Chaplains are a diverse group of men and women appointed by various churches to serve the University.

 

They are available, in cases of emergency, 24 hours a day, and seven days a week.

 

They can help in any case of anxiety or distress, from bereavement to concerns about life and work, for one-off meetings or longer term support.
