UNIVERSITY OF EXETER IT SERVICES

OVERVIEW OF REGULATIONS FOR THE USE OF COMPUTING FACILITIES

This is just a simplified summary and you should also read the full regulations.

If you break these rules you may be breaking the criminal or civil law and will certainly be liable to disciplinary action.

1. These rules apply to anyone using any kind of computer hardware or software, for any purpose, at the University of Exeter, even if it's their own equipment and even if it's not connected to the institution through a network. They also apply to anyone at Exeter using the computer facilities of another university, college or organisation.

2. You must register with whoever is in charge of the equipment you want to use. To use systems managed by IT Services, you will usually need to get your registration form signed by your departmental representative, tutor or equivalent. Any user identification or password you are given is for you alone: don't tell anyone your password and don't try to use anyone else's.

3. Computing facilities can only be used for authorised purposes and special permission is needed to use computers for personal, commercial or outside work. There may be charges for some computer use.

4. You must make sure you know how to use the equipment. You need permission to move anything, to borrow anything or to connect any new hardware.

5. Follow instructions for starting and finishing sessions of use, and while you are using computers. Use only authorised software.

6. You mustn't damage, interfere with, or modify any hardware or software; if you do you may be charged for having it put right. Note also:

You must get permission to load any new software.

You must not introduce, or risk introducing, viruses or anything similar.

Never interfere with any other users data.

7. Smoking, eating and drinking near computers may result in damage, so don't do it - especially in public access PC rooms.

8. You must not create or circulate any offensive material.

9. You must not knowingly do anything to disrupt the work of others.
