Log about the peace talks at Camp David

Last week I read an article in the {1} TIME magazine, that {2} was about the similarities and differences between the peace talks at Camp David in 1987 and June 2000. In 1987 only very optimistic people expected Sadat and Begin to find a solution for the Middle East problem. The problem in 1987 was at least as complex as it still was 13 years later. Arafat was expected by his Arab supporters not to make any concessions on Jerusalem and no significant territorial compromise. During the negotiations he insisted on his position and made a peace-pact impossible. Therefore he is still considered to be a hero in the Arabic world and will probably stay alive for longer. Sadat was willing to find a solution without consulting other Arab politicians. He became a hero in the western world but was completely isolated by his Arab brethren. For his pact with Israel, Sadat was killed by an Arab nationalist only few years {3} later. Araft knows that it is very unlikely for the Palestinian people to get a better deal with Israel in the nearer {4} future, but it was more important for him to remain integrated in the Arab world than making {5} a final peace-pact with Israel through concessions. In 13 days of peace-talks 1987 {6} the solution was found at the very end and both sides did not leave before the pact was signed. During the days of negotiation absolutely no information of substance was given to the press. At Camp David 2000 the information to the public was also very limited, but still too much not to disturb {7} the negotiations. The information to {8} the public made it more difficult for both sides to find an acceptable solution for both sides.
