Punctuation can play an important part in academic writing in showing the relationship between ideas. Punctuation markers add meaning to the words they are with, so you need to make careful choices when you use them.

The most significant markers are:

: the colon

; the semi-colon

- ... - dashes

( ... ) brackets

Other markers will be presented, discussed and practised elsewhere.

On these pages you can:

Study the meaning of these punctuation markers

Read a summary of the functions of the markers above

Identify differences between the markers in sample texts

Practise choosing appropriate markers

Create your own text based on some information

You can also study sentence punctuation in sentences with 1 or more independent clauses, plus punctuation problems and appropriate punctuation here!

The pages are based on TDF materials produced at the ELC, University of Exeter, and are copyright!
